M.B. Miller I like to think about why people do things -- especially why someone might do something terrible or illogical. What drives people to act the ways they do? I start with characters and think about why they would do something or how they would react to something. If I have a strong sense of who the character is, it comes very easily. If I'm struggling, it's time to reassess and re-evaluate who that character is. Obviously, most of my writing is very heavy on characterization.
M.B. Miller When I was working in the news industry, writer's block wasn't an acceptable answer for not having turned in a story, so I learned (forced?) myself to write through it, even when I wasn't feeling inspired or didn't like the way the piece was turning out. I found that, once I finished a first draft, I would often find that I was more enthusiastic about it and I could work with what I had to make it better. With fiction, if I find myself straying from writing, I make myself do housework. I hate housework!
