Mostly I get inspired to research. There will be one thing I really want to know everything about. For Skull Nuggets it was trepanation. For Freak Night at the Slee-Z Motel (forthcoming from Grindhouse Press) it was human sideshow attractions. For my next book, it's the philosopher Diogenes. I take in everything I can about that topic and let it incubate. Then, if I'm lucky, a story pops out.

A story (novella?) I'm calling Shelter. The premise is what if the Greek philosopher Diogenes was around today? What would happen? Without giving too much away, there's a homeless uprising and everybody is dogs.

With Skull Nuggets, it started with just wanting to know as much as I could about trepanation, which is something I'd been aware of for a long time and I finally had the time to research it.
