My first book, Brandon Makes Jiao Zi, because it's based on my son's favorite thing to do with his grandma whenever she comes to visit. When my son was very little, every night before bed, he would list out all the things he did that day and we would make a story from those events. His favorite was always about making Chinese dumplings (jiao zi) with his grandma. And that was how Brandon Makes Jiao Zi was born! Thanks for the question!

(view spoiler)[Eugenia, I'm looking for a critique swap or just advice from someone who has a Chinese background. My WIP is a story in English about a little Chinese girl who has immigrated to America. I'd like your opinion based on your experience about whether it's conveying Chinese culture accurately.

Hi Ellie! I would be happy to take a look at your WIP. Although my story is a little different because I was born in the US so didn't know anything different. Also, my parents speak English and went to grad school in the US, so I didn't have the typical immigrant experience. If you think I can help, please feel free to send me your WIP at eugenia@eugeniachu.com.

When my son was very young, I couldn’t find children’s storybooks to read to him which touched upon Chinese culture and which included some Chinese (Mandarin) words to teach and/or reinforce his Chinese vocabulary, so I started writing my own. I used to tell him bedtime stories based on his day one day just started writing them down.

From my son! Whenever my mom comes to visit, she and my son always make jiao zi (Chinese dumplings). This story is based on their time together.
