“I’m sorry,” he said again and closed his eyes. And suddenly I knew he wasn’t apologizing for something he’d already done; he was saying he was sorry for what he was about to do.

Large portions of "Ashkettle Crazy" came from the area where I grew up. The mountains inspired me, so did the people. The book is heavy with the regional dialect from that area. When it's just myself, talking with my friends and family back home, we still sound a lot like Sonny, Bo and Dack Ashkettle.

Create characters, settings, eras, worlds and universes you love. It's much easier to sit down every day and revisit a place that enchants you. I've found that if I'm having a hard time muddling through, usually it's because I've strayed off on some old side road that's nothing but black snakes and potholes. Never be afraid to stop and take a look at the map from time to time.

Being a writer has multiple bests, but my best best of all is when something wonderful accidentally ekes out of my brain and inadvertently lands on my page. It's lovely -- and startling.

I've found that sometimes you have to just step away from your characters and the world you've created regardless of how much you love them. When I reach that point where I hate the thought of sitting down at my keyboard, I'll power down and go do something just for fun. What's fun? Netflix. Netflix is definitely fun.
