I wanted to write about a hero who wasn't a superhero - just an ordinary young woman thrust into an extraordinary situation. But the premise behind the villain was: what if the "Dark Lord" hadn't just been banished, but had fled the annihilation of his people by the "good guys", and had spent thousands of years in exile, waiting for revenge? And then I took that out of the standard fantasy setting, and transferred the tropes of the "Quest to vanquish evil" plot-line into a sci-fi setting instead.

Touch wood: I've never had a severe case. Whenever I've really struggled to put words down, I have forced myself to write any old rubbish - anything that I can manage. Sometimes I've accidentally written gold and used it later!

Only having to answer to yourself. And there's something very liberating in just being able to create whatever you want, in controlling all those destinies, in shaping all those worlds.
