Mark Seghers My travels in North Africa years ago. My work as attorney; my immigration law practice requires poring over U.S. state department reports on many countries, including predominantly Muslim countries. Thousands of conversations - in Arab countries and in Europe and the U.S. - with Muslims about religion, terrorism and the conditions in their countries.
Mark Seghers The stories won't let me alone. They're chewing their way out. I'm not sure if that's inspiration, really. I think of inspiration as a warm, loving feeling of what one does. For that, I read Walt Whitman and Auden, Elliott, Yeats, and others. Their love of the language seeps through the page, and makes me aspire to do what they have done. Is that inspiration? I guess so.
Mark Seghers A novel based on my days as a deckhand on the Mississippi River just upstream from New Orleans. That, and wrapping up the final edit(s) of my first novel.
Mark Seghers Your experience, no matter what it might be, is worth examining and mining for your work.
Mark Seghers Just write. Anything. Your favorite song lyrics. The Happy Birthday song. Just keep vomiting out. You might throw it all away. But it will keep you going until you have something worth keeping. Good luck!
