Steven Lawrence Mostly by forcing myself to do mundane activities like shopping, cleaning, even taking a shower--anything that is repetitive and tedious. When I get bored my mind turns on my imagination for entertainment. Pretty soon I am getting ideas for all sorts of things and I scribble them down in the fervent hope that I'll be able to read my handwriting later on.

Steven Lawrence I have been doing quite a bit of animation over the past decade, so I have thought a lot about characters that are sentient objects. For my first children's book I wanted to try something that could be whimsical, epic and slightly educational. I imagined a couple of letters hanging out, best friends, but from different backgrounds. Then it occurred to me that maybe they didn't know each other and were, in fact, separated by a fantastic obstacle that existed because of this separation. If they were brave enough to challenge the obstacle and overcome it, the result would be a new world.
