J.B. Lucas Hi Janice,

Are you reading Loreticus or Iskandar?

JB
J.B. Lucas I've always been interested in how states become what they are, and how they evolve through the grandest and pettiest of politicians. When I first started the book, I was considering the India-Pakistan split and how the former became a oligopolistic democracy, whilst the latter always had the heavy influence of the military in politics. I am also very interested in the foundation of Israel; the self-sacrifice of highly educated people as they went from their European and American roots to an unfamiliar and unfriendly land. This is the original inspiration behind the city Palova.

The story of the Emperor Marcan is derived from a boardroom battle I watched early in my career. I wasn't senior enough at that point to take sides but I was still influential enough to be kept in the loop. I've watched several unexpected expulsions from the CEO's chair over the last 15 years.

Then, during the first stages of writing, the UK threw itself off the cliff with the Brexit vote. This was in essence an immediate example of petty politicians, corporate influence, and vested stakeholders acting against the interest of their fellow citizens or even their own children.

Combine the two conflicts - the macro and the local - and you have a relatable tale which we are living through. The book was much more for me to put myself into the shoes of all of the different players than it was to create a pulp novel.
