I'm only an aspiring writer myself so it's hard to offer advice. But, I would say listen to what people say, the way they speak, and take the peaks and troughs of language and lace it into your dialogue. Let people speak in your books, this is what I have been coming to understand. Also, if you've been there and seen it, it makes the whole thing so much better. Nothing beats going there or describing what you have seen, smelt, heard and felt. I can't write about places I haven't been to.
