When someone connects with my words, my art, it always makes me feel good and like I've made an impact, even if it's fleeting. Writing is my art and to be able to call myself a writer makes me burst with joy.

Sometimes I eat chocolate, which often seems to be a cure all. I try all kinds of different strategies: journaling, reading, writing poetry, going for a run, and even editing an older piece. Give yourself permission to quit. Walk away. Tell yourself that it's only a hobby and you don't have to do it. Then watch the urge to write come crawling back to you, screaming at you to start again. Have patience with yourself because writing and finding your voice takes time. The more you write, the better it will be so know that it's okay to write crap sometimes. That's what editing is for!

One of my favorite ways to get inspired is to go see art, which lights up my own creativity. I love learning the story of an artist who's explored different mediums, which inspires me to play with words in different forms. This is particularly helpful if I'm feeling stuck. On a more regular basis - I journal and use emotion to let the words flow.

This book started out as a different story, but as I struggled to find my voice, my love of New Orleans and my time there in law school started to emerge. After bouts of writer's block, I started to really have fun writing Abby's story and trying to make the story both engaging and page turning. That's when I found my groove.

I'm currently working on a non-fiction book about leadership and resilience that has more personal stories and reflections.
