P.J. Kelly I've got a few ideas for my next novel so I'm allowing them all to swim around and to fight for ascendency. One will make it through and that one will be my next novel. I need to believe in my stories one hundred percent so waiting for them to prove themselves is very important for me.
P.J. Kelly About six years ago I was made aware of the huge levels of responsibility teachers shoulder. The expectations placed upon them are massive and the idea that they need to be concerned not only about the welfare of their students inside their classroom but also outside that boundary and into the home. That really concerned me. They are not just educators. They are also expected to be social workers and it can be very demanding and stressful. They see the troubled children that walk in their classroom door and the mistreated ones too. It made me wonder; How far would they go to save a child? Would they break the law? And that is where my novel 'The Good Teacher' was born. It asks those questions and answers them too.
P.J. Kelly I built myself a wooden cabin that is seperate from my house and I absolutely love going in there and shutting myself away from the world. I have all my favourite things in there. Some from my travel days when I was younger and others that I have more recently collected. I have a desk, a couch and my turntable as well. I still have all my old records from when I was in my teens and I love putting them on and hearing that crackle of the needle on vinyl. Just being out there in my cabin is inspiring. It always makes me feel like writing.
P.J. Kelly Perseverance! I really do believe that it is the ones who persevere who get published. If you believe in a story then you owe it to the world to get it out there so never give up. Just keep trying and trying and trying. There will be lull's where you don't feel quite as driven and that's okay, but you must return to the work and finish it. You owe it yourself as well.
P.J. Kelly Creating a world from nothing is probably the thing I like best about being a writer. The places and characters that come from my mind feel real and I love being given the chance to live through them and that feeling of surprise when they do something I wasn't expecting. They really do come to life.
P.J. Kelly I always make sure that I have other stories to work on. This stimulates my brain and means that I have something that excites me and propels me to write. When the block is hanging over something that I have to finish then I just power on through it and force myself to write. Sometimes you just have to blow away the cobwebs and get to work. You can't always be smiling and ready.
