Denitta Ward Hi Joan -- let's try ddward@comcast.net - I'll need to check what's going on with denitta.com!
I am SO GLAD you enjoyed Somewhere Still!! I'm excited to hear from you!
Denitta Ward I just added you as a friend, Lois. Thank you!! And Somewhere Still is free (Kindle) this weekend (11/4 and 11/5) https://www.amazon.com/somewhere-stil...
Denitta Ward A cup of chamomile tea, lemon squares, and a good lay down in a hammock with a magazine in hand help me immensely. If I'm feeling ambitious enough to go for a drive, I find a stroll through the Denver Botanic Gardens -any season of the year- restorative.
Denitta Ward Do it. You have a book that is waiting to be created and only you can do it. Carry a journal and a pen with you and write every day. At first, I remember it felt like a chore and I told myself, "This thing isn't going to write itself, you know!" That statement ended up being wholly inaccurate. Once the writing really started, the story took hold and took on a life of its own. My fingers worked hard to keep up.
Denitta Ward I wrote Somewhere Still as a Mother's Day gift. The inspiration came from pondering what my great-grandmother's life may have been like. She was a single mother in the Roaring Twenties in Kansas City. Similarities between my main character, Jean, and my great-grandma, as I knew her, ended up being very few, but she was the spark for the story.
Denitta Ward It's unusual, perhaps, but for me I get an idea and then land on a title first thing. Yes, totally backwards from many writers who pick a suitable title last. I'm discovering that I've done more than a few things backwards - like attending my first writing conference only after completing my first novel.
Denitta Ward I am editing the next book, Somewhere Else. It's an entirely different historical era and location which has been exciting to research. I'm at the point of doing what I call "story enrichment" - the bones are written, the plot is laid out, and now it's time to really set the characters free as I edit.
Denitta Ward World building. For me, writing makes time stop. I can get so lost in the historical era and characters that I do not realize that minutes and hours have passed. And some of the characters become so vivid, it's a sheer joy to write their stories.
