Ana Brazil I went to college in Tallahassee, and New Orleans--5 hours away--was the most magical, most decadent, and the most fascinating city in the world. As a history student, I fell in love with every historical inch of New Orleans. I wrote my masters thesis about late 19th century New Orleans, and during my research I got the idea for Fanny Newcomb.
Ana Brazil I get out my iPhone and set the timer to 30 minutes. I force myself to write-and-only-write-I'm-not-even-allowed-to-plot for 30 minutes.

If, when the timer goes off I still don't want to write, then I walk away and do something else.

BUT...without fail, once I get into writing, I keep going once the timer goes off.

Before writing historical crime fiction, I was a technical writer, and I've used this 30 minute technique SUCCESSFULLY for all of my writing gigs.
