Having created something from nothing is a great feeling, but for me the best part is seeing the effect my book has had on the lives of others. When people read it and have solutions for all of their fears, and gone on to successfully do things they wouldn't have done, that is the best thing about being a writer.

The best way to start is to, well, start. Just brain dump your thoughts. Also, read and research, which will give you ideas and different perspectives. I always carried Post-It notes and when an idea came to me, usually when I was in the car, I would write it down and follow it up later. My car dash was covered in Post-its.

Write! Don't wait until you feel like it, just start. Starting is one of the best ways to get over procrastination, even if you promise yourself you will only do 10 minutes, once you start your progress, or the challenge :-), will motivate you. Reviewing your previous days writing will also motivate you to write.
For non-fiction, when you first start just get the material out of your head and into your computer. Worry about structure later. Also, if your are not writing, then read, research, see what other material supports your writing that you can refer to.

Right now I am building a coaching business around the book, and I am planning two sequels, one for children (you are never to young to learn to set goals) and one for retirees (to get the most out of retirement).

I was writing down goal setting techniques that world for me and a friend of mine on the travel industry had just published a book. I told her about my book idea and she said it was a story worth telling. She encouraged me to complete the manuscript and get it published.

I had some major success in life (and some failures) and started thinking about how I set goals. I realised that I didn't follow the traditionally taught (or not taught, as the case may be) techniques. I started writing down my view of the world, how the failures and successes came about, how I dealt with them, and what worked and didn't work for me. From here I thought there would be other people in the same boat as me. I wrote the book for me and for them.
