On days where I didn't feel like writing, I would read the news. I _assure_ you: it didn't take long then to get spitting mad and have the words pouring onto the page. This world desperately needs help in feeling more empowered on how to get involved and how to stand up. We were delighted to provide that positive energy—that's a BIG incentive to write my heart out.

My coauthor, Joanna, and I were in the pit of despair following the 2016 election and had done various civic actions to make ourselves feel better (hosting a documentary promoting body positivity, for example).
Then a friend asked us how to help her middle-schooler feel less pessimistic about the country and its leadership. We put those two thoughts together: actions to promote a better world and helping people figure out how to get involved. Tah-dah! Wake, Rise, Resist: The Progressive Teen's Guide to Fighting Tyrants and A*holes was born.
