(view spoiler)[My debut novel Chardelia Foss and the River of Fear (publishing December 1st (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Chardelia-Ri...) was inspired by a number of things, but most of all by the title character, who is kind of an amalgam of lots of different things, including water. I wanted to write a character who felt an affinity with water, and had an unusual view for a teenager - a sense of her own destiny. That idea threads through the whole story, and comes strong at the end. (hide spoiler)]

Lots of things inspire me. it's important to be open for inspiration. People, music, nature (big inspiration for me - it's in every single book I've written), and literature. Because if literature doesn't inspire you, then it's going to be difficult to write it!

I'm currently editing volume 1 of book 7 of my YA series The Danny Canterbury Tales. I'm also thinking about my next project, which will be a sci-fi murder mystery written in Elizabethan lyric poetry. Or at least some of it will :-)

Best writing advice I ever received can be summed up in three words: Tell the story.

Writing can be painful and joyful in equal measure, but I think the best thing is when you write a really satisfying sentence, that articulates with precision a concept or an idea, and flows like poetry across the page. Or when a reader tells you they were moved by your work. That's happened a few times, and it always makes my day.

I try to keep going, even when I feel like I don't want to write. It's only when I'm literally spewing out rubbish that I stop. It's important to write regularly, it's like a muscle you need to keep fit. Sometimes it's impossible to write - like when you are going through a particularly stressful period. Then, you just have to accept it and know that your stressful experience will eventually be ripe for writing about.
