From a story a stranger told me on a plane about an avid birder who took his wife on a whirlwind trip to pursue a rare bird. When they stopped to get gas, he left her at the gas station. This story set off all kinds of alarms and lights for me, and I knew I wanted to explore them further.

For me, writing helps me to be an active participant in the ideas and issues of my life, even if there's nothing physical I can do about them otherwise. It helps me make order where there is chaos. And it immerses me like nothing else.
