When I have writer's block, I write about something else other than what I intended. Often that means I start writing music instead of words.

The best thing about being a writer is conversation with readers and hearing the impact on their lives. Knowing that people benefit from your words is fuel.

I am currently working on the follow up books to "Nia and the Kingdoms of Celebration". Many kids and kids-at-heart (parents, aunties and uncles) have already asked to learn more about her friends from the other kingdoms, such that I want to publish their stories as soon as possible.

My inspiration comes from observation and conversation. I swing from extrovert to introvert mode daily. I don't enjoy prolonged "banter", but I love well-crafted puns and people who take time to provide and appreciate them.

I got the idea for my most recent book, "Nia and the Kingdoms of Celebration", from reading to my daughter and watching her engage in a multicultural world. She loves princess stories that describe the protagonist as "the most beautiful girl in the world" or "the fairest of them all", but we soon realised that she questioned her own, natural beauty at a very early age. There are not many books featuring black characters and describing them as beautiful. However, the story is about people, children and kingdoms of all races coming together. The rest of the inspiration came from a National Geographic special on the last supercontinent, which I found fascinating.
