Mike Katz One of the most fascinating things we discovered was how New York City has been central to the development of American music since the advent of commercial recordings. The very first African-American blues record was made and pressed in Manhattan in 1920; Mamie Smith's 'Crazy Blues' for Okeh Records. The first black owned label, Black Swan, was established in Harlem in 1922. It featured blues artists Ethel Waters, Charlie Patton, Blind Lemon Jefferson, and many more. These artists laid the groundwork for electric blues, Rhythm & Blues, and Rock & Roll.
