The seeds of Breathe were planted decades ago, when my friends and I were bemoaning the perfect alpha males we kept reading about in our romances. I wanted my alpha male to be all torn and squishy on the inside, and then get a whole lot more sh--stuff thrown at him to really bring him down. Then the heroine could come in and rescue him. Breathe has been rewritten many times but the original premise has stayed the same. Thankfully, the genre has grown so that Kane isn't the only squishy alpha male out there. :)

My first few stories flowed out of each other, but I'm always on the lookout for good conflict in real life and how I could turn it into a story. The aftermath of Hurricane Sandy is a good example. I also re-read classics and play with ways to modernize them.

I have several stories in the hopper, including some that relate to the Boston world of Breathe, and one that's set in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy at the Jersey Shore.

Everyone says this, but it's so true: keep on writing. Even if it's flash fiction in your lunch hour or a fanfic story you post online; even if you've torn up your novel five times and despair of ever finishing it. Just keep writing. Take classes (online classes are very cheap; check your local community college) and join a group if you can for support and encouragement. But mostly: write!

Living my dream! I've always wanted to be a writer but I hid that wish for many years. Once I decided to let myself commit to writing, I knew that any course I took or story I wrote would get me closer to my goal, and it did. I'm also very good at sitting in front of a computer, so this job is perfect for me. :)

I feel as though I don't get writer's block, because if I don't have the urge to write there are four hundred other things I can do instead! But if I'm working on a story and I can't seem to get the sentences to flow, I usually look at the whole scene to see if I really need it. Sometimes writer's block is there for a reason.
