When I can't think of where to start, I open to a random page in a book of poems or magazine, find a line that speaks to me, then start writing with that as the first line. Then I sit down in a quiet place with pen, time myself for 10 minutes, and write as much as I can without worrying about punctuation, grammar, etc. This technique was taught to me by author and teacher Zelda Lockhart.
