What mystery in your own life could be a plot for a book?
Marco Etheridge There are so many mysteries in my life! It would be difficult to single one out. For that matter, life itself is a mystery, fascinating and strange.

Can you tell us a two-sentence horror story?
Marco Etheridge He crept closer and closer to the ancient cupboard as if against his will, drawn by the incessant sound of scratching. He opened the cupboard door, and saw the velvet darkness of death as the clawed hand closed on his throat.

If you could travel to any fictional book world, where would you go and what would you do there?
Marco Etheridge I would travel to Tolkien's Middle Earth and go visit Tom Bombadil.

What books are on your summer reading list this year?
Marco Etheridge I am rereading Raymond Carver's short story collections.

How do you deal with writer’s block?
Marco Etheridge I listen for the voice of the character(s). If they aren't talking, I go for a bike ride or play guitar. Writer's block is usually not such a huge deal for me. I tend to write quickly and then re-write.

What’s the best thing about being a writer?
Marco Etheridge Creating a believable character and then having that character speak to you in their own voice. That's the best!

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
Marco Etheridge There are many writers and author that are much more knowledgeable than I am. Read their books about the craft. But, mostly, just write like a madman or madwoman, then clean up the messy first draft. Repeat as needed.

What are you currently working on?
Marco Etheridge My current project is a novel set in Europe and Thailand, part political satire and part conspiracy thriller. Again, the project is set loosely within the constraints of a genre, but not completely contained by those constraints.

How do you get inspired to write?
Marco Etheridge This sounds crazy, but I ride the UBahn in Vienna. There are a thousands of stories on the UBahn, each one just waiting to be observed and then told.

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
Marco Etheridge The idea for this book started with a weird, random dream. That germ of a dream idea fell into the notion of working within a genre, but bending the edges of the genre as much as possible.
