Talking to my people, figuring out reasons why I struggle.
And sometimes, it just isn't the right time for this story and I tackle something else instead.

That I get to read my own stories, making them up as I go along

The best advice I have ever heard came from Marion Zimmer Bradley, something akin to - writing is 10% talent and 90% practice. Go write!
I would like to expend that to - go write and enjoy your writing! If you enjoy what you're doing, it is never wasted time, even if the first results may not be as good as you hoped them to be. It will come with time, and in the meanwhile, you're at least having fun.

I have some new ideas, but I am also thinking about having some of my best selling German novels translated into English. I did that with "Of Elves and Wolves" ("Von Elfen und Wölfen") and haven't regretted it!

The classic - reading a book and being highly dissatisfied with the story, complaining loudly, and someone (my mom) telling me to do better.
In my case, my anger stemmed from all the obstacles in the hero's way.
I sat down and started to write a story without obstacles for the hero - only to realize that a) this is dreadfully boring, and b) as author, I can write obstacles AND remove them!
I was hooked and haven't stopped since.

Since it took me a total of thriteen years to finish that one, I don't quite remember. I wanted to write a historical novel whose main character was an innocent, a lucky child that was easy to please. Guess I was once more kinda fed up with brooding, difficult types - but to write such a character and keep the story still interesting is much more challening.
Hence, the thirteen years.

I'm afraid my own life is terribly boring and devoid of mysteries - which, admittedly, is nice, because it gives me the time and strength to think up mysteries in my mind. I do sometimes pity my characters since they have to go through so much trouble, but, well, otherwise it would be ... boring ;-)
