Alexa Kingaard Find a spot that brings you comfort - a coffee shop, your back-yard, a park, a museum, and just write. I found that writing most of my ideas in long-hand brought forth the most meaningful thoughts and passages.
Alexa Kingaard It fulfills a sense of purpose by being able to leave something behind for my children. There is also a community of authors who are seeking their own fulfillment, not necessarily fame, so it becomes a sense of belonging to a group of like-minded individuals. There's a lot of cheerleading and support that goes on behind the scenes, and every person on the planet has something to share.
Alexa Kingaard I've only been writing for a couple years and found it most helpful to figure out what works best for me, not for other writers. I write whole chapters in my head, sometimes multiple chapters, then take myself to a notepad or computer to put everything down on paper. If it doesn't feel like a good day to write, I don't. I never force anything and have yet to experience writer's block.
Alexa Kingaard MY NAME IS ROSE
Follows a young girl who is raised in a commune in the 70's and 80's and doesn't share her parent's passion for living off the land or with the isolation that is thrust upon her. Attending public school in the nearby town, a new world opens up to her in which she longs to participate, and her imagination starts to work overtime as she discovers the inner workings of the communal lifestyle. Obsessed with the fact that her father may not be the man her mother is married to creates endless questions for Rose and threatens to destroy relationships with the ones she loves.

This overly imaginative young girl becomes disillusioned with her surroundings and chooses a different path than her parents created, leaving them heartbroken at her insistence they are hiding something from her. She has difficulty accepting her parent's explanation, hoping instead for a confession that will prove her right. Although she finds love far away from her roots and upbringing, her wounds only deepen as she keeps her family at arm's length. What she loses during those years can only be retrieved with her understanding that "a Rose by any other name is still a Rose."
Alexa Kingaard The loss of my ex-husband in such a tragic manner inspired me to write KEEP FOREVER. I had never written for publication or aspired to become an author before this time.
Alexa Kingaard KEEP FOREVER is my debut novel and it was inspired by the Vietnam veteran I loved. After an auto accident triggered a PTSD episode in 2011, he took his own life, 45 years after the shooting stopped. It relates fifty years in the life of a combat veteran and the burden he brings home to his family, but with love, devotion, and loyalty to one another, they learn to overcome the obstacles of living with PTSD in their midst.
