A book about ghost stories by women written between 1860 and 1930. It is about how these stories explore such as things as money and property, female poverty, imperialism and "race", images of female death, and women's experiences of the First World War.

I had never thought of writing a book about Firestone. But I have taught her work to undergraduates for over 10 years and when a student drew my attention to Zero Books' call for proposals on her I realised it would be great to do this. She's such a provocative, challenging and relevant writer. I am very grateful to that undergraduate student!
