A YA high fantasy novel called 'The Name Of Magic,' that's in the vein of Sabriel by Garth Nix set in a country analogous to ancient China.
It's about an poor girl with a large family whom she helps to provide for who gets offered the chance to study at the Imperial Academy for mages. Along the way she discovers the source of the magic in their world and befriends him while getting drawn into a larger conspiracy that threatens to unleash an ancient banished evil back into the world.
