Hi Ken, good question - I have two hats!
History and weather put Motherland firmly in the Scandi category, and without giving too much away, some Scandi locations are in the novel. My heroine, Captain Ivanova, is also a cultural outcast in the vein of Hoeg's wonderful Miss Smilla.
But, where Scandi's fascination lies in dark crimes being committed within a supposedly liberal, ordered, society, Motherland is the opposite. My detective is trying to find her way in a dark, corrupting, seductive, and chaotic country. In that way, it's closer to the noir worlds of Philip Kerr and Martin Cruz Smith.
