I'd classify myself as aspiring so I'm not sure I'm qualified to answer but what I tell myself all the time is;
1) Write. Write more. Like anything else it gets better with practice.
2) It's all about a good story. Tell a story you're passionate about and it'll probably be good.

Getting the voices in your head down on paper! I love it when characters write themselves through your fingers, their personalities evolve and form and take on life.
