It's a lame answer, but these stories just come to me! I go to the movies often, maybe once a week. Being a cinephile and one who played many videogames growing up, I really got a good idea of what it meant to craft an immersive world, not just an imaginative one.

I tend to step away from writing my current project and enjoy other hobbies like reading, running, or cooking. Something will usually come to me if i'm exercising another part of my brain.
