Kelly reached deep under the old shed, as far as his arm would go. When his fingers finally made contact, he froze, wishing he had worn a glove.

I'm reading Roger Zelazny's Amber series (the first six books), and I'm finally embarking on Anne Rice's Vampire series.

Too many things to count! I'm working on book three of the Milligan Creek series, "The Water War," due out in Fall 2018. I'm also in the beginning stages of a sci-fi novel about a space elevator, another novel called "Prisoner 1141," and an adaptation of a horror film script I wrote called "The Judges." Meanwhile, I'm finishing up the first instalment of my graphic novel series "Meth: The Immortal," about a pig named Methuselah who accidentally gained immortality--and a whole lot more. I always have several projects on the go, some on paper and some just in my head.

Be persistent. Many people dream of writing, but few people actually write. During a school presentation this fall, I met a 15-year-old girl who had written 50,000 words in the month of November as part of a writing challenge. I can already tell you that girl has a long road of success in front of her, simply because she is already so committed to her craft. I've been in writers' groups where almost no one actually writes outside of our sessions. It's sad. So, be persistent, and don't beat yourself up if it's not perfect. Every writer knows that writing is all about rewriting.

The best thing about being a writer is seeing something that began as a ghost of an idea in your mind enter the world and become something that other people can experience and enjoy. Nothing beats that first opportunity to hold a book I've written or a movie I've made. It's a miracle every time.

I used to suffer from writer's block, but I rarely suffer from it anymore. Writer's block is a manifestation of perfectionism, which is a creativity and productivity killer. I made this realization several years ago, and the moment I realized I would never get things perfect, I started to have a lot more fun, and I became way more prolific. Writing is a matter of incremental improvement, so don't be too hard on yourself right out of the gate. Keep throwing time and resources at whatever you're working on, and it will get better. And if you happen to hit a creative wall, don't be afraid to walk away from a while. That's not writer's block; that's your brain saying it needs a bit more time to process whatever problem you're tackling in the background while you work on other things.

I don't have to wait around to be inspired; I'm inspired all the time. Once you learn to look at the world in the right way--identifying potential story germs and asking good "what if?" questions, you'll find the world is bursting with story ideas. Then your problem becomes how to choose which ideas to pursue.

My most recent book is "The Water War," book three in the Milligan Creek series, which is due out in Fall 2018. I go the idea from a newspaper story I read way back when I was in grade 8. It was one of the first manifestations of the "Assassin Game" in a local community. I stole some ideas from that game and then added a lot of my own and came up with a fun adventure story about a water war that begins when a new girl moves to town.
