My late Father-in-law left Ireland when he was a young boy. .He and his brother became wards in 1901 at the Gage- Dougherty's Home for Waifs and Strays sent to Dr. Barnardo's- Shepard House November 14, 1906. Sailed for Canada on "Dominion" September 12 1907 Arrived at Quebec September 22.

I'm currently working on a historical novel, that is set in the period between 1913 and 1937. The man character is a 15 year old girl, sent from Ireland to Canada as a Home Chid. These Children were either on the streets or in orphanages and were sent to Commonwealth countries ( Canada, Australia) to live and work on farms. Martha, main character, because of a letter from her dying mother is sent to live with relatives in Kingston Ontario where her adventure begins, one that takes her and her newly found family into The Great War and eventually into the dangers of France just before WW2 \.
