I'm not sure I'm qualified to answer this question, although I get asked it regularly. Write something, anything, just get it on paper. Figure of speech, of course. Have an idea, write about. Had a dream that inspired you, jot it down. You never know where the first idea will come from. Haunted by your past, share your story.
