I am currently writing my first draft of a stand-alone historical fiction novel, which I chose to set during World War 1. I have always found this time period fascinating, especially in literature. (One of my favorite books, Rilla of Ingleside, was set during the same time.) Because November is National Novel Writing Month, I began writing this book just three days ago - it will probably be released sometime next summer.

I plan all of my books out before I begin writing them. That way, I never get truly stuck. Even if I am have a bad day and my writing isn't flowing, I can still get the words out on paper. Although it might make the first draft sound rather sloppy, this technique helps with writer's block, and the choppiness it causes can easily be fixed when writing the second draft.
