Susi Bocks I had started writing a book about our dysfunctional family but after attempting to get out the worst parts of it, realized it was just too depressing a topic. My focus shifted to "how do we talk about what we all as humans endure?" What reinforced the idea was a survey I conducted asking what top 5 emotions that people experienced on a daily basis. 176 people participated and then a book idea was born. The best part was the collaboration between best friends. Terry Susi contributed the art, I contributed the writing. It was a true expression of what can be enjoyed in the visual and the cerebral. We brought ourselves to it in a big and personal way. Loved the whole process!
Susi Bocks Be open to constructive criticism, read everything/anything you can get your hands on, and appreciate your unique style!
Susi Bocks My goal this year is to write every day and develop more styles of poetry which I've not delved into previously. And continue to work on research projects/editing/proofreading throughout the year for other writers.
Susi Bocks As much as it's gut-wrenching, there's a freedom involved in the process of letting it all out on a blog, a book or sharing with others privately. The words I learn and the growth from being influenced by others thoughts, it's added a level of maturity to my writing but also my own personality. I love that!
Susi Bocks I don't force what just doesn't want to emerge on the page. Nine times out of ten the best way for me to handle it (and not rip my hair out!) is to give myself a break, allow my mind to focus on other things that need attention. Once I can relax, the ideas will flow in.
