I really like westerns. The old Texas Rangers are all hero's to me, warts and all. I research true incidents, then make them a fictional account centered around my character, [me] and just start writing. I'll write chapter length, let it rest a day or two, then go back and edit and change, rest, and repeat, until I like it.

Get a copy of "On Writing Well" by William Zinsser. The book will help everyone write cleaner and clearer. I read it when I first started writing, 20 years before I got anything published. It's a book every writer needs to read.

I put myself in the situation that I'm writing about. I work through how I would react to the situation. I write in first person. Everything is how I will react so knowing myself there is most always an answer.
