That is such an interesting question that I never gave any thought to before. Hmm. At the moment I can't think of anything mysterious in my own life that would make a good story. I don't know if that's good or bad. But maybe that's why I like to read and write in that genre.

I got my idea from my real life job. There aren't too many stories featuring court reporters and I wanted to write a mystery, so I put the two together.

For anyone serious about writing, start writing. Sound easy enough, right? For me I took a free class at my local library put on by three authors who gave advice and tips. They suggested joining a critique group, which I was lucky enough to be able to do. Having a group of writers was so helpful to me. It might not be for everyone. That's a personal choice. Visit your local library and pick up books on the craft of writing. Learn some of the basic rules of writing a novel, and then you can figure out which rules can be broken. Attend a writer's conference if you can.

I think the best thing about being a writer is the escape it gives me when I'm in the "writing" zone and I can make up characters and forget about the real world for a while.

I deal with writer's block by stepping away from my computer and doing something completely different. It may be for a day or a week or even two. I'll think about my story and jot down notes for when I do sit back down.
