Allan Brewer Well, summer is pretty much over here in the UK. I am working my way slowly through the complete works of Anthony Trollope and trying a few SF and urban novels in between. AT is not to everyone's taste, but I do rate him as one of the best English authors of characters ever. Set and written in the 1850s it's possible to learn a lot of social history as well, in a very effortless way.
Allan Brewer I blog fringe science on my website (AllanBrewer.Wordpress.com), and it's those fascinating bits of real science that are sparking off ideas for more science fiction stories.
Allan Brewer The initial impetus for this book was a frustration with some 'wrong turns' in human history, and a desire to voice alternatives to them, even if just in fiction. But as the developing story and characters took on their own life, those initial ideas were discarded in favour of more subtle and satisfying threads of narrative. I don't know if that happens for other authors, but for me anyway, the original idea for the story was just a place to start from, and is not now actually included in the final story.
