In college a girlfriend brought me to her parent's home for Thanksgiving, where I met her uncle, who had been a Flying Tiger in the Second World War. When I read John M. Barry's book Rising Tide, about flooded 1927 Louisiana, I put two creole kids together in the period and followed their adventures as they came of age in that very dynamic and challenging time.
