Grahame Anderson Every parent knows the feeling when they try or want to give advice to their teen/adult children as they get older and can get rebuffed with replies such as - leave it dad, not interested - or - I'm not talking about that - or worse still the headphones go on in the car and the conversation is over.
I thought a clever way was to write a series of short stories about life incidents from - love, spirituality, how to's, money, religion, decision making, direction, ambition, imposter syndrome, death and dying to name a few. I then wove a story of a dying man who accidentally pulls his grandson into his death with him and they end up in the afterlife.
Because the grandson is not meant to be there - the powers that be told the grandad to take his grandson on a tour of a 'behind the scenes' look at life.
They travel through a magical world and on a journey in search of the Best Seat in the Universe.
This was the idea that allowed me to give my sons tools to think about each area of their life without me having to trap them in the car and force them into a conversation ;0)
Grahame Anderson One word, one sentence enters my head - possibly a news headline or something I overhear such as - no one knows what happens in that home for unwanted children - that's the kind of thing I try to analyse fast and ask if there's a story there. I'll do a quick outline to see if I can start with the mystery - add some human element and work to find an ending.
Grahame Anderson I am working on a number of projects. I don't start a book and write till the finish - I wish I could. I tend to have other story ideas on the way and then have to do quick drafts of them. I usually work on three or four projects at once.
Grahame Anderson It has been said by many people but is absolutely true - read a lot and write a lot. Treat your first books like practice novels to test your writing skills. If you can afford to get an editor - they are the magic that help a writer understand their own story.
Grahame Anderson Knowing that things I write have a direct effect on people wherever they are in this world. What I write today may not be read by someone for twenty years and they might change their life because of it.
Creating stories that never existed in this world before and characters that readers can believe in. There's no better job in this world than being a writer.
Grahame Anderson I tend not to suffer with writer's block. I get stuck sometimes with the plot but I usually switch and let it percolate for a few days and then go back to it. Meanwhile I write other parts of my novel.
