The barricade across the door was holding and Thomas listened as they clawed and banged uselessly at the wooden frame; as long as the door held they could make their escape out the back. Then everything fell silent, the only sound the hammering of Thomas' heartbeat in his ears and he knew, deep down, that it was too late to run.

Each story comes from different places and either get built up over time or are ready to go straight away. The title story, "The Green Cathedral" came about when I was on my way to work and happened to glance down a wooded pathway - the overhanging branches on both sides of the path created a space that reminded me of church and cathedral ceilings and the title popped into my head simply as sounding like a nice title for a story. It took a few months before the story itself came to me and fitted together. "Rain" started as a what if? question that simply asked what would the country be like if it never stopped raining. "Photographs" on the other hand evolved as I was writing it and was maybe the fastest to finish from initial idea to final draft.
When I decided to put a collection of stories together I looked at what I had done over the years and did some re-writes and editing until I was happy.

I make a cup of tea and talk through the problem with my wife, she has a brilliant way of posing questions that force me to look at something from a different angle or find my way back to the original idea that sparked it all off. She's also never afraid to tell me when something is rubbish and needs to be changed all together. After that I can usually go back and find a way to carry on.
