Jim Stein I white-boarded six potential main characters, genres, and plots getting ready for the annual NaNoWriMo self-challenge (where you commit to writing 50k words in November). I matched up a post-apocalyptic Urban Fantasy with a 1st person POV 17y/o protagonist. I liked the idea of an adopted character with special powers inherited from supernatural parents, having Native American overtones, and the idea that rock (and other killer music) has true power-in the magical sense. So I circled that column and got to work.
Jim Stein Doing what I've always dreamed of doing, building worlds of science and fantasy, aliens and deities, technology and magic. There really is no limit, even though my inner critic often argues the point. I want to put stories into people's hands to help unleash imagination and escape the pressures of life for a while. This has always been my dream.
Jim Stein I usually take my Great Dane and muse (Marley) for a walk. Have to use the old railroad grade trail because I talk to her about where the plot or characters need to go. If i did that in town, people would think I was (more) peculiar! In warmer weather, I bring my recorder so that I have voice notes for later reference. Then it's a matter of powering through and making myself write...something.
Jim Stein As of Jan 2018, I have first drafts complete on two novels. Strange Omens will be book two in my Legends Walk series. That 1st draft is cooling off while I work my second pass on a light SciFi space adventure tentatively titled Planet Fred. A spunky botanist, giant talking slug, and killer plants - if that's not highbrow literature, I don't know what is.
