Tabitha Bouldin When I was writing Trial by Courage, I knew I wanted to write the story of one of Cheyenne's brothers. Choosing which one to follow was easy but decided which way his story would go came as an epiphany. I was working on what I thought was a totally unrelated story when what felt like a ton of bricks slammed into my head and I knew that this was Kane's story too. The female character, Faith, was perfect for him, the things she was going through and the description of the man that I had already sketched out were too perfect to be anything other than God's direction.
Tabitha Bouldin It varies, sometimes it's just life in general that will spark a story into being. Sometimes I take my nightmares and write them down just as a way of dealing with them and they explode from there into a full-blown book. I've had entire books fly onto the screen based on a single thought, a what-if moment.
Tabitha Bouldin Hahahaha, let's see, I'm working on a Bachelor's in Creative writing with a niche in fiction. I'm writing the sequel to Trial by Courage while waiting on my second book, Macy's Dream (completely unrelated to the Trials series), to be published in September. I also have over 20 other plot lines in different stages of development and I homeschool my two kids. I think it's safe to say that my plate is full but I keep adding to it anyway. I'm also still trying to read at least one book per week.
Tabitha Bouldin Read, read, and then read some more. Read books from the genre you think you'll write in, read books from any genre you find interesting. Everyone has their own style, so don't try to copy someone else, just be yourself. And be prepared to make mistakes, I worked on my first book for three years before I released it, and it still wasn't exactly how I wanted it. It took me seeing it in print to know what I really wanted. Now, it's perfect. Never give up on your dream, if you want to write, don't let anyone tell you that you can't. Even national bestsellers have been turned down at some point.
Tabitha Bouldin Everything! I love the creativity, the ability to look at a blank screen and turn it into something that no one else has done before. No one has the exact same story; we all see things differently, experience emotions differently, and view the world through our own lens. When you can take all that information and turn it into something that other people enjoy, it brings me an extraordinary sense of joy.
Tabitha Bouldin What seems to work best for me is to simply take a step back and stop trying to force a story. The characters know where they're going, I just have to be there when they're ready to tell me what comes next. As far as not having anything to write at all, the same concept applies. If I don't have any ideas then I put the computer away and stop worrying about it. A forced story is not my idea of a good story. The ideas will come when it's time, and when you're ready for them.
