That would be Middle Earth. I'd look for an elf.

Tom picked himself up, wondering what had happened. He turned around to look in the mirror and saw that his face was gone.

When I was 4-5-&-6 years old, we lived in a 1800s farm/school house. This was in Fairfax, VA. When I dropped by after graduating from Culver Military Academy (kids who grow up in military families have a thing for returning to places they've lived just to see the house again) I met the current owners and we spent time comparing my stories of living there with others who had dropped by. Apparently quite a few of the folks who had lived there had returned. Just to see the old house and swap stories. The current owners shared that almost every one who returned said the house had ghosts. A peeping tom, and Confederate Calvary Officer who had been killed one night when he ran out of the house to see what had made a loud noise. It was a Yankee patrol.
The Reb died with his boots off. Lore has it that he returns to find his boots so that he can finally rest in peace.

I'm planning on catching up on a favorite Author, Steven Erikson. Book II in the Kharkanas Trilogy - Fall of Light. And Books I & II of The First Tale of Witness series - I The God Is Not willing & II No Life forsaken. It doesn't get any better than this.
And, though I'm a shameless re-reader, I want to find a new, good SF series and ditto for Fantasy.

When I realized I had written myself into a corner. Had the story in my head but . . . I'd never written a book before. I created 6' long spools of writing paper and built up the story outline a chapter at a time. THEN, I started writing. But the alt-history aspect and Roman history had been in my head for years. Thx for the question.

I'm an avid SF and fantasy reader. Have been since I first read Tolkien and Frank Herbert's Dune. Realizing where I was(prison), reading and music where the foundation of getting through it day-by-day. That and my daughter and her family. Writing letters was a given. The step into writing a novel was pretty natural. I would lay in my bunk and create alt worlds. What if I went back in history to . . . say, 410 AD with Rome and Britannia. If I could take 3 things with me, what would the be? The list goes on and on.
And my daughter was the one who kicked me in me rear and demanded I quit talking about these crazy ideas and start writing. By the time a got out the first 5 books in the series were written and Legacy was self-published. And a few thousand hours of wonder and inspiration were well spent.
Unfortunately, there it lay unread, unmarketted, and lonely while I got my life started again. That was 5 years ago. Now, as Joe Cocker sang, with a little help from my friends :)
