I generally put the work in progress aside for a moment, or a day, or whatever time it needs and go out in nature, or listen to music, or watch something I'm inspired by. I generally find music can spark an idea, or I just need to refresh my brain and look for beauty. Sometimes, it means needing to go inside the mind of the character, as though I were an actor, put myself in their shoes and see where the story wishes to take them next.
