I see something, hear something, or read something that penetrates me emotionally. The feeling opens me up to begin writing. Once that happens, if I am in a quiet, comfortable place with some good music in the background, hours pass like minutes. (See also the answer to writers block).

I find that a sip from a small glass of bourbon or scotch piques the senses and causes my brain to start firing again. At least this is the excuse I use. Alternatively, I just write about anything. Eventually, something comes out that I can use.
