Nicole Alexander Hi Cintia
thankyou for your message. And Happy New Year! I've been off-line enjoying the holidays so my apologies for the late response. My number one suggestion is to stop worrying about what everyone else is doing or saying. There will always be doom and gloom. In any industry. That's human nature. The trick is to rise above the negativity. If you want to be a writer. If you're passionate about it then concentrate on being positive. Everyone gets rejected at some stage in their life - relationships, in the workplace with ideas and in the creative world. I have my own share of rejection slips from when I first started writing short stories and poetry. It happens. Perseverance is what invariably wins through. As for inspiration. Listen to a piece of music, visit an art gallery, read an old newspaper or magazine. Be observant and read, read, read. Learn. The smallest idea can become a story. If you're still stuck, take a creative writing class. That will help point you in the write direction. Take care.
Nicole Alexander Hi Lily, there isn't a sequel to Sunset Ridge. I did consider writing one however, as you probably know, not all the characters make it through the narrative. Because of that very reason I felt that a sequel wouldn't work as well when compared to the original book. Thankyou for contacting me. Nicole
Nicole Alexander Im very behind with my reading however Im hoping to revisit some classics. Wuthering Heights and G.H. Fearnside's All Stations West and Lonesome Dove. On the popular fiction side I was forwarded a review copy of L.S. Hilton's Domina.
Nicole Alexander Hi Townsville Library. My apologies for the delay in responding I'm touring at the moment and the schedule has been hectic. One of the most challenging aspects of researching The Great Plains, was ensuring that I knew exactly what the state of Oklahoma looked like, landscape wise, as my characters moved through it. The first half of the novel covers the reconstruction period following the American Civil War through to the arrival of the frontier settlers in the 1890s and onto the Dust Bowl period, or great droughts of the 1930s.
Nicole Alexander Write, read widely, redraft and refine. Edit your work until it becomes a pearl.
Nicole Alexander Usually I go and do something else. Living and working on a cattle station in northern NSW means that there is always something else to do. Eventually I'll return to my desk, either a few hours later or perhaps the next day. If I'm still having difficulties I'll do some research.
Nicole Alexander My current work-in-progress is set during the 1830s in New South Wales, Australia, when settlers went beyond the 'outer limits', beyond the designated 19 counties, in the search for arable land.
Nicole Alexander With my new work, The Great Plains, I wanted to write a narrative that told the story of two worlds, two wild frontiers, Australia and America, and the people, both settlers and indigenous who inhabited those countries.
Nicole Alexander Hi Margaret, The Great Plains covers the reconstruction period following the American Civil War through to the 'Dust bowl' period of the 1930s and then to Australia and the Great Depression. The work required a huge amount of research including a trip to Texas and Oklahoma last July.
