I don't really depend on being inspired. I just make myself write as a routine, pretty much every day. Some days I write more, other days I write less. The challenging part is what to do with the writing I do when I don't have some clear project structuring it. I wind up with lots of text of uneven quality, and for any given chunk it's hard to decide whether to try to turn it into something real or just write it off.

I realized that there was nothing suitable to explain my career to my adult children. They are smart and curious, but their interests aren't in technology. I was teaching material to MIT computer science majors that I thought was great, but it was too long and too technical for my intended reader. So my challenge was to select the right parts, and then to find good ways of presenting those parts.
