I like positive feedback from a reader that enjoyed my book. It makes all the time and effort required to produce a quality product worthwhile.

I had some personal experiences in battling my mental illness which I thought would interest readers. Again, most don’t realize what someone with a serious mental illness goes through on a day-to-day basis. I wanted to enlighten, as well as entertain, the reader about this subject.

I keep goals in mind. In writing my debut novel, obviously my goal was to be published. Of course, there are setbacks to anything in life, but as long as I kept my goal in mind, I always got back on track when I suffered a setback.
Also, I write about mental illness, which doesn’t get enough fair exposure in terms of what the reality is of having one. I get inspired by sharing this reality with others.

I have three main points.
First, take a writing class. If one writes fiction, take a fiction writing class. There are certain rules in fiction that must be followed. Also, one learns the intricacies of publishing through these classes. One doesn’t need a Masters in Creative Writing. I took two fiction writing classes at my local community college, which helped me immensely.
Second, read a variety of other authors. One can even read nonfiction to help one’s writing. The amount of styles that writers employ is infinite. One can learn from every one of them.
Third, quit one’s day job if one can. Writing is strenuous. If one can do it full time, one is more productive.

I take a break. Not a coffee break but an extended one of a week, or even a month. When I see a manuscript with fresh eyes after having taken a vacation, read a book, or even worked on another manuscript, I always have new ideas for the one that stopped me previously. Giving one’s mind a rest from one’s current manuscript is the ultimate cure for writer’s block.
