Most of my ideas come to me whilst I am asleep. I wake up in the early hours of the morning with a premise that I just have to note down. When I revisit again in the morning I start fleshing it out and seeing whether it is something I can run with.

The urge gradually crept up on me. I didn't even really know what I wanted to write about at the time, I just enjoy the craft. I wrote a few things here and there but when I came to my crime thriller I realised I was on to something and, more than that, this is what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.

Having just completed the final book in my Gamekeeper Turned Poacher crime series I'm at the planning stage of my next work. This one is about a man who finds he has a terminal brain tumour and, as he faces his own mortality, realises that the life he led has been wrong. Yet trying to make amends in the limited time left is far harder than he expected.

If you have a story to tell and you think you have the ability to do it justice then get it written. However, I would suggest that writing is the easy bit. The challenge is getting it out there. You can write the best book in the world but if you can't find a way of ensuring more than friends and family read it you're stuck.

The creativity and the best element of that is how the characters I create take on find their own direction. By that I mean that sometimes I can plan exactly what I think is going to happen to them but when actually writing the book they sometimes take me in unexpected directions.

Fortunately it's something I haven't experienced. In fact, I can't keep up with the number of ideas for new work that come to me. That being said, some days I find writing easier than others. I have found having a clear schedule helps keep me on the straight and narrow.
