My children fill me with ideas. And because of them, I've spent many hours in the children's section of the library, enjoying the wealth of children's picture books. I think it's a remarkable art form—poignant, magical, simple—and I wanted to contribute to that.

I got the idea for this book when pushing my son on the swing in our backyard, just as it appears on the cover. It struck me that trees and parents follow a similar course: that we have a period of activity with our young children, but it is a fleeting moment. And so we make a point to cherish every moment.
